Well, the last post is gone--at least from the Active Topics page, plus it was getting kind of long.
But I found it so inspiring, I thought another thread might be in order.
Let me share a couple more.

This first one is on a guitar my brother John and I are building together. It has a center ring of burl walnut, which is bordered by paua shell (the solid kind).

You can see the backer board used to hold the router through the soundhole.

Next is a rosette by Dan Fobert (a fellow LINT-onian). It is on a Bouzouki he is building, and I'm sorry not to know the how's and why's on this one. But I think it's really cool.

If you visit Dan's gallery page (on the LINT site), you will see he is quite the creative fellow.
Hope you enjoy,

Steve

That's a nice one Steve. Someone will enjoy that rosette every time they pick up the guitar. Is that for someone special, since both you guys are in on it?

Very nice Steve. Man, that Fobert rosette is out of this world! I guess he has to excavate all those little channels seperately... Cool...

Very nice John and Steve.

Having seen a number of rosettes, that Fobert reminds me of a stencil/coloured effect. The photo isn't that great so I'm probably wrong as I've been some insanely great purfling on german tops I didn't think possible.

Warmest regards,
Terence

Wow, Thanks for sharing Steve!
I hope you show us the burl and paua when you get some finish on it!
I just finished my second Mandolele with a lacewood rose.

Thanks guys,
Since you asked so nicely.

I might add the back and sides are wavy sapele from the zoot man.

Really nice, Wade. That's the kind of inspiration I'm after.
And thanks for the kind remarks, guys. Like my bro always says, we all need the love. Or we need all the love we can get.

Bruce--this particular guitar that John and I are building is a spec. We certainly intend for someone to buy it. We just thought that a collaboration effort was long overdue, plus it would be an effective way to lighten the misery. John is doing the things I can't stand, and I'm tackling some of the things he can't abide. The theory is that it should just nearly build itself. (Which of course isn't happening....)

Bro--no idea how Dan did the rosette. He showed that at a LINT meeting that I was unable to attend.

Is the neck sapele too? The color match is perfect. Very cool!

Steve, That is so cool you and your Bro doing a traid-off thing with this instrument. I hope you keep us informed of the progress.

Joe, The neck is some wavyish mohogany I got from my Brother. It just happends to match.
I love it when that happends.

Thanks guys,

Lance, You may have seen some pictures of the first one at the NEL table. I think they had a binder of pics from the group Uke build we had. Next time I'll bring it in person.
This one was just finished and is commisioned. Sadly I only have it for one more week.
I have a 3rd on the bench though.

Steve, I really like that rosette. Is the paua Depaule's 1/16" wide?

Steve, thanks! The reason I asked is that from the picture you posted I would have guessed it was wider.

Anthony, I know what you mean. What throws the eye is that b/w/b either side of the paua. The inner black lines blend so well "into" the shell, that the sandwich makes the paua look wider than it is.

I didn't get that out too well, but I believe you know what I'm trying to say.

Steve
